Diabetes

Diabetes is a syndrome characterized by disordered metabolism and inappropriately high blood sugar (hyperglycaemia) resulting from either low levels of the hormone insulin or from abnormal resistance to insulin's effects coupled with inadequate levels of insulin secretion to compensate. The characteristic symptoms are excessive urine production (polyuria), excessive thirst and increased fluid intake (polydipsia), and blurred vision. These symptoms are likely to be absent if the blood sugar is only mildly elevated.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce enough, or properly respond to, insulin, a hormone produced in the pancreas. Insulin is needed to turn sugar and other food into energy. In Diabetes, the body either doesn't make enough insulin or can't use its own insulin as well as it should, or both. This causes sugar to accumulate in the blood, often leading to various complications.

Gestational Diabetes: Pregnant women who have never had Diabetes before but who have high blood sugar (glucose) levels during pregnancy are said to have gestational Diabetes. Gestational Diabetes affects about 4% of all pregnant women.

Many other forms of Diabetes mellitus are categorized separately from these. Examples include congenital Diabetes due to genetic defects of insulin secretion, cystic fibrosis-related Diabetes, steroid Diabetes induced by high doses of glucocorticoids, and several forms of monogenic Diabetes.
